Being a Massage Therapist, I'm very used to getting in tune with my clients so I can give them exactly what they need, be it a relaxing session with a gentle, loving touch or a deep tissue session to break up the knots. Sometimes, there is more to the session than meets the eye. As a Reiki Master Practitioner I am able to sense areas that are in need of work without my clients telling me about them, and in most cases my clients don't even know that there's an issue there until I find it. Another phenomenon that happens when you're in a tiny room, opening up to the wisdom of the universe as you work on a client...is spirit communication.
I've got quite a few stories around this topic, but most recently I was working on one of my 'regulars' when something very interesting happened. I started to smell fresh roses. Clearly there was no source for that smell, and it was much too far into the massage for me to suddenly notice it was coming from my client's hair, clothing, etc. I knew from a previous conversation with her that she feels mediumship is a bunch of hooey. She doesn't know that I'm a medium. She does know that I went to a recent even on my vacation to see one (John Holland). That's how the subject came up. "Did you do anything interesting on your vacation?" Now that's a loaded question when you pose it to someone like me!
I decided to go for it. I asked, "do you have someone that has passed on who used to smell like roses?" Without any delay she said, "Yes, my aunt always smelled like roses." Apparently my client didn't like that smell from the way she described it. In a light manner I said, "I think she might be with you." As expected, she said, "no." It's a shame that my client wasn't able to open her heart to the fact that she may be receiving a message. I'm friendly enough with her that I know a little about her, but not enough to know who in her family has passed over, and surely not enough to know that they may have had a penchant for the scent of roses. Maybe it scared her. I don't know. The point I want to make here is that not all people are open to receiving messages and it's not entirely appropriate to just try to pass one on to a complete stranger. Since this client and I have chatted extensively and have a great rappport I mentioned it, but if this were a complete stranger I wouldn't have said a thing. The fact that these things happen without my solicitation is another matter. In my massage sessions I don't actively seek out communication with Spirits, although I do ask for the guides, angels and protectors who watch over my clients to come and help me give them what they need, and heal them.
Just yesterday I had a client who is fairly new, just moved here from the east coast and who I'd only seen about 3 times. She and I have a good rapport and are both into natural remedies such as foods that help heal. Good enough. But not good enough for me to tell her that there was a spirit who wanted to say something to her during the session. He was quite persistent. I told him I couldn't tell her unless she somehow brought it up so I'd know she was open to hearing from him. Within the next few minutes she began to talk about her family and how her mother had changed since her brother died. I listened, then looked back over at the spirit with a surprised look to which he replied, "Well? Are you going to tell her I'm here?" I told him 'no, not this time.' It's very important to me to be respectful to my clients. They are in a vulnerable position and I'm not about to take advantage of that. Not to mention that I work for a chain where this service is NOT on the menu. The clients that see me regularly and consistently have spirits with them usually come out with something very telling at some point, and I then allow myself to be the Messenger.
I'd love to know what people think about this, since it seems like a fairly unusual set of circumstances, at least to me. :) If you were getting a massage and suddenly your therapist suggested that you may have some 'company' would you be open to it? What do you think?
